How to pick the coach that is right for you

Coaching is a paradox.

A well-trained coach partners with the leader and is not directing or giving their own advice in the coaching process. This is a result of coaches seeing the client as whole, complete, wise and capable of discovering their own best solution. A good coach is an expert in creating a safe space for meaning making and can coach a person from any professional background.

That said, coaching requires the coach to exhibit coaching presence. The coach has to show up whole in order to be of service to the client. This requires the coach to do their own inner work. The coach also uses their intuition and insights, which draws on life experiences and their own development. In other words, the preparation, lived experiences and values of the coach you pick will influence the experience you have.

Chemistry matters and it is essential for the leader to feel comfortable and safe. You are in choice when you pick the coach you want to work with. Ask questions and trust yourself when making your decision. You can find a listing of credentialed coaches that follow the coaching competencies and adhere to strict ethical standards through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Coach Finder or through your local ICF Chapter.
